Vienna International Model United Nations 2013

Nowadays there are many MUNs held all over the world each year. Vienna International Model United Nations ( VIMUN ) held in Vienna, Austria annually is organized by the United Nations Youth and Students Associations of Austria-Academic Forum for Foreign Affairs ( UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA). The first VIMUN was held in 1996 to celebrate the 50 anniversary of the United Nations. The conference takes place at the United Nations Office in Vienna. VIMUN is one of the most authetical MUN worldwide because of its international and diversifying atmosphere. This year there  were 250 participants from 50 countries of all over the world.  From Albania, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, China, Cote D’Ivoire,Croatia,Cyprus, Czech Republic, El Salvador, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mali, Nigeria, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, Trinidad and  Tobago, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Zimbabwe, etc.

 From 11th until 15th  August 2013, Ms.Aleda Kushta, a student from the Economics Department at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences participated at VIMUN. She represented the UAE in the IMF with the topic of ‘’The Sovereign Debt Crisis: Europe and the IMF’’. It was discussed about the historical background of the IMF, the Gold Standard, the Gold-Exchange Standard, the Bretton Woods System, the Quota System – IMF Funding and its activities,Credit and the Role of the IMF in the Crisis and its future challenges.

 The Agenda included the Labour Market, Unemployment Rate,Entrepreneurialship,Austerity measures, the emerging markets like China,Brazil,etc. The USA unwillingness to provide money, growth measures and policies, giving loans to the small and middle businesses, taking under control the rates of interest and the current Liquidity problem. Emphasizing the fact that IMF provides growth and fiscal stability. A book written by Karl H.Stingeder, a case study: North Korea, how predictable is the regime? was given with the aim to  have a deeper insight about current issues happening in the world.

  In the first day, all the participants had to register at the Hotel Park Inn and later on they enjoyed a dinner reception at  ‘’Heuriger Feuerwehr Wagner’’,buffet with typical Austrian dishes. It was a great opportunity to make first acquaintances with fellow delegates and getting to know each others. The second day, the registration at UN Offices was made. Each of the participants  took the  personal ID which gave them the permit to enter in UNO City. An opening ceremony and committee sessions followed it. Also, it was arranged  to eat lunch at UNOV Canteen where the real diplomats stayed. The Mayor of Vienna hosted a dinner reception for the participants at Vienna ‘’City Hall’’ ( Rathaus). The third day, continued with the committee sessions and was followed by dinner at ‘’Neni’’, a Jewish restaurant with its traditional dishes and an intercultural night at the theater ‘’Urania ‘’. It was organized by the staff of VIMUN and some of its participants which shared their perceptions and cultures while performing their traditional dances, songs , wearing traditional clothes and playing different musical instruments. It was an amazing night. The fourth day, was full of debates about the resolution paper. Later on, a clubbing night at ‘’Platzhirsch’’ was organized. The fifth and last day,was focused in the distribution of certificates of participation and the photo session. The General Assembly held a closing ceremony where the President of the United Nations Youth and Student Association of Austria Mr.Michael F.Pfeifer welcomed the participation and appretiated the collaboration. A speech by VIMUN 2013 Honorary Speaker Director of the United Nations Information Service ( UNIS) Vienna, Mr.Janos Tisovszky followed by the speech of the Secretary General of VIMUN 2013 Mr.Mathias Horlesberger.  Then, the participants  had the opportunity to take some photos at the Headquarters  of the United Nations Vienna. It was a great experience full of activities which everyone enjoyed and learned a lot of new things.
